Terry Gets Stem Cell Treatment

Terry, male Siberian tiger, with his enrichment.
We’re excited to share hopeful medical news about Terry, our 14 year old tiger. Terry is afflicted with a hip condition similar to dysplasia in dogs. If Terry were human, he’d be a candidate for hip replacement to maintain mobility as well as enjoy a pain-free quality of life. We’ve kept Terry as comfortable as possible while searching for a good solution to his problem. One of the newer, most promising medical treatments involves the use of stem cells harvested from the animal’s own body.

Dr. Steven Neihaus and Dr. Kevin Drygas of Capital Veterinary Specialists (in Jacksonville) initiated stem cell treatment on Terry by removing a small amount of fatty tissue from his shoulder. Stem cells were extracted from the tissue and several days later injected back into Terry’s hips. Stem cells have the capability of rebuilding and repairing damaged tissue so hopefully, they will do just this for Terry. He is resting comfortably and within 4 to 6 weeks, we hope to see positive results. Stem cell treatment has helped many house pets and we are optimistic that this sweet big boy will benefit too.

We are ever so grateful to Drs. Neihaus and Drygas and the entire staff at Capital Veterinary Specialists for their loving care of Terry. Our animals have benefited from the caring generosity and expertise of many members of the local veterinary community. Repeated thank-you’s, chuffs and roars to everyone who continues to help us! Your care has made a great difference in the lives of so many of our beloved animals.
