Catty Shack Heroes: Girl Scout Troop Creates Rain Barrels

Girl Scouts
Girl ScoutsRecently, we had the honor of partnering with Girl Scout Troop 1103 as they worked toward one of their awards. Troop 1103 had just finished their “Get Moving” Journey that focused on utilizing energy within the environment, conserving energy, recycling, and more, when they began thinking about their Bronze Award project. They had recently visited the Ranch during a Night Feeding and earned their “Animal Habitats” badge, so when they read in our newsletter about the Ranch being nominated as a Green Business of the Year (although we didn’t win), they realized there was an opportunity to help us.

Girl ScoutsAfter coordinating with Jordan, our volunteer coordinator, the troop decided to create rain barrels for the Ranch. They purchased large garbage cans, painted them, and inserted spigots and intake lines. The barrels will be installed around the Ranch to collect rainwater that will then be used for a variety of purposes, including cleaning, landscaping, and more.

Girl ScoutsIn accordance with the Bronze Award requirements, the troop also had to raise awareness about their project. During their Spring Cookie Sale, they handed out over 300 flyers for the Ranch! The girls also adopted our foxes (Chula and Tippy) at silver level in honor of the cookie sale mascot, “Luna the Arctic Fox.”

Girl ScoutsWe are thankful these girls decided to spend their time working on a project for Catty Shack! We are so excited about the new rain barrels and love having new friends who share our passion of animals. (Oh, and Tippy and Chula love their new adopters!)

July 4th Enrichments

Saturday, July 5th, 2014 0 COMMENTS

EnrichmentsHow did you spend your Fourth of July? We hope you had plenty of time with family and friends…and maybe even a few fireworks too! We wanted to make sure the residents of Catty Shack enjoyed the Fourth of July as much as their human counterparts…so our enrichment team decided to surprise some of the cats with red, white, and blue paper-mache enrichment items! These paper mache items were created with flour/water for the paste, non-toxic children’s glue to attach the streamers, and hidey-holes to secret away some chicken pieces for them!

On Thursday, July 3, guests to the Ranch were treated to a special viewing of an “Enrichment Day.” At approximately 2:30 PM, our volunteers handed out the paper mache items filled with chicken treats to some of the cats on “tiger row.” They quickly tore their treats apart and enjoyed the mess they created to get to the treats!

EnrichmentsOur enrichment team created over 48 of these items to be handed out on July 3 and July 6. If you missed the Enrichment Day on Thursday, make sure to come out this Sunday (July 6) from 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM for tours! Enrichment items will be given to some of our residents at approximately 2:30 PM. As a special bonus, The Blood Alliance will be on site taking blood donations! Anyone who donates blood will receive half off admission for July 6. Click here for more information on our July 6 Tours.
