October Birthdays and Anniversaries

Thursday, October 1st, 2015 0 COMMENTS

Topaz, head shot.

We have only one October celebrant. Topaz, our Golden Tabby tiger celebrates her birthday on October 1. Our beloved diva is 16 years old and will enjoy her special birthday cake made of ground meat and evaporated milk. All birthdays and anniversaries are special days and this event is ever so sweet given Topaz’s current status as in remission from lymphoma.

You can adopt Topaz online!

There are no residents with October arrival anniversaries. Stay tuned for November and December as we have many birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate.

Happy Birthday Topaz!

Birthday tigers
Come visit the Ranch this month and help four of our residents celebrate their birthdays! The tiger trio of Hercules, Aphrodite and Athena will be 13 years old on September 10th. It is hard to imagine them as once being puppy sized bundles of fur.

Spike will be turning 8 years old this month (exact date unknown). We treat the celebrants with a cake made of evaporated milk and ground beef or ground turkey, frozen in a heart-shaped pan. Spike thinks that since we don’t know his exact birthdate, he deserves cake every day this month. All four of these tigers are ready to entertain you as you walk along “Tiger Row”.

We celebrate anniversaries of the arrivals of our animals as well, however none of our animals came to live at the Ranch in September.

Happy Birthday Hercules, Aphrodite, Athena and Spike!

Terry Gets Stem Cell Treatment

Terry, male Siberian tiger, with his enrichment.
We’re excited to share hopeful medical news about Terry, our 14 year old tiger. Terry is afflicted with a hip condition similar to dysplasia in dogs. If Terry were human, he’d be a candidate for hip replacement to maintain mobility as well as enjoy a pain-free quality of life. We’ve kept Terry as comfortable as possible while searching for a good solution to his problem. One of the newer, most promising medical treatments involves the use of stem cells harvested from the animal’s own body.

Dr. Steven Neihaus and Dr. Kevin Drygas of Capital Veterinary Specialists (in Jacksonville) initiated stem cell treatment on Terry by removing a small amount of fatty tissue from his shoulder. Stem cells were extracted from the tissue and several days later injected back into Terry’s hips. Stem cells have the capability of rebuilding and repairing damaged tissue so hopefully, they will do just this for Terry. He is resting comfortably and within 4 to 6 weeks, we hope to see positive results. Stem cell treatment has helped many house pets and we are optimistic that this sweet big boy will benefit too.

We are ever so grateful to Drs. Neihaus and Drygas and the entire staff at Capital Veterinary Specialists for their loving care of Terry. Our animals have benefited from the caring generosity and expertise of many members of the local veterinary community. Repeated thank-you’s, chuffs and roars to everyone who continues to help us! Your care has made a great difference in the lives of so many of our beloved animals.

What better way to mark the end of summer vacation than to visit Catty Shack Ranch before school starts! The Ranch will be open for Daytime or Night Feedings on ten consecutive days, starting Thursday, August 13th.

Daytime tours will be offered Sunday, August 16th through Thursday, August 20th. Gates open and tours begin at 1:00 PM with last admittance at 3:15 PM. Sunday the 16th is our regular monthly “Enrichment Event” with the animals. Watching them enjoy ‘bloodsicles’ (popsicles for big cats) and play in their pools may make you want to indulge in a sno-cone, cold drink or other refreshment from our concession stand.

Our usual Friday and Saturday Night Feedings occur on August 15th, 21st and 22nd. Gates open and tours begin at 6:00 PM and the feeding starts at 7:30 PM. We encourage you to arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 PM to enjoy the tour and spend time with the animals before the feeding begins. Last admittance is 7:15 PM.
