Nero Birthday Cake

NeroApril 29 was Nero’s 8th birthday!

Come out tonight for our Night Feeding and a special birthday surprise for Nero – a birthday cake! Our volunteers make birthday cakes for the residents as a treat for their birthday and the cats think they’re delicious. Chances are, though, it won’t be the type of cake you want to share with them….our cakes are made of evaporated milk, ground beef, and a little blood. After the ingredients are mixed together, the cake is frozen to make it a cool treat for the recipient.

On top of the birthday cake celebration, we will be feeding our residents over 450 pounds of meat at 7:30 PM – don’t miss it!

April 2012 Roar N’ Snore Recap

Thursday, April 26th, 2012 1 COMMENTS

Bonfire Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the April Roar N’ Snore! We had over 25 campsites with more than 65 campers out at the Ranch during this bi-annual fundraiser. Friends, families, and individual campers joined us to have a great experience.

Campers had time Saturday afternoon to set up their site and spend time watching our residents before dinner was served under the “big tent”. Shortly after, everyone joined Curt and the volunteers as we fed over 450 pounds of meat to all of the residents. As the sun began to fade, lights were shut off around the animals and campers gathered around the huge bonfire. Campers and volunteers alike joined together as s’mores, stories, and jokes were passed around the fire while Tal, Freddy, and all the other residents began their nightly vocals.

In the morning, breakfast was served, campsites were packed up, and all campers went home tired and happy! Thank you again for joining us for this April’s Roar N’ Snore. If you did not get a chance to join us this time around (or would like to come back out), we will have another Roar N Snore in November. Keep an eye out on the website and/or facebook for when registration begins.

Catty Shack’s Busy Weekend (And a Special Surprise!)

Phone Book UnveilingYellowbook Pages

Catty Shack had a very busy weekend this past few days…

First thing’s first: we can’t hide it anymore! AT&T has donated their phone book cover to the Catty Shack – and Nokia’s on the front! Check out the cover to the left and make sure to keep a lookout for your phone book this year! The phone books with our covers will begin to be distributed around July 1.

Catty Shack was at the Jacksonville Landing on Saturday for the official unveiling of our phone book cover (and to join in their Earth Day celebrations). In our photos you can see our Executive Director – Curt, Assistant Director – Kim, the AT&T representative that helped us receive this wonderful donation – Carolyn Ward, along with the photographers behind Nokia’s beautiful photo – The Jordan Collective Photography!

The Jordan Collective Photography is composed of Cary & Kacey Jordan The Jordan Collective- two very talented photographers – located locally in Jacksonville! Make sure to check out their website (including their portfolio and blog) for more of their wonderful pictures and to learn more about them.

After the unveiling of our “surprise”, Curt talked to the kids on the Educational Stage out front of the landing. While many of the children finished their arts and crafts they had been working on, Curt told them about our residents.

And if all of that wasn’t busy enough, Catty Shack had several volunteers handing out information at the Riverside Arts Market under the Fuller Warren Bridge and at the Landing during the Earth Day celebrations. Between the Landing and RAM, we met many smiling new faces – and some returning friends of the Ranch! If you ever see us out & about handing out information, take a moment to stop by and say “hello”….we love to see you!

Three Baby Names Announced!

Friday, April 20th, 2012 2 COMMENTS

JadeCayenneWhew!Nikki We had so many great names submitted for our five baby tigers that it has been extremely hard for us to decide! Finally, three of the baby names have been chosen. See below for the names and the winners of the baby name contest. Thank you to everyone who submitted names – remember, your gifts are tax-deductible and all the money raised went straight back to our animals for care, enrichment, habitats, and more. The cubs’ new habitat that is being built will cost us about $10,000 – so a big thank you to everyone that has made it possible for us to give these sweet girls a “forever home”.

For those of you who don’t know the story behind the babies, here it is! We “re-homed” five tiger cubs New Years Eve day from a facility that could no longer care for them. For the past couple of months, we have been calling the cubs by colors while we decide on names. “Pink”, “Green”, and “Red” cubs were born in one litter on December 9, 2011. “Yellow” and “Orange” cubs were born in another litter on November 25, 2011. We are so grateful to their previous facility for allowing us the opportunity to bring them into our sanctuary and give them a home! Since the five girls have been raised together, they will be sharing a habitat even as they grow older – they love to play with each other!

“Red” Cub: Cayenne

Our three winners will be receiving a glazed plate with their cub’s paw print and name along with a beautiful 8×10 photograph. We would also like to take this time to give a very special “thank you” to Nikki Kimbleton who has done so much for Catty Shack.

“Yellow” and “Orange” cubs will be receiving their names soon – we will announce the names as soon as we are finished debating. Thank you to everyone for being so patient while we decide on the names.

Remember, you can still come and see the cubs during daytime events – just check our Hours of Operation.
