Volunteer of the Month – November (Pt. 1)

Sunday, November 25th, 2012 0 COMMENTS

Every month, the Catty Shack Board of Directors decide on a Volunteer of the Month to give an extra special “thank you” to. This month, we had three awesome volunteers who “tied” for volunteer of the month! Below, read about Laura – one of November’s winners! Our other two winners will be posted later this week.

Every one of our volunteers is special to us and we are thankful for all of them – without our volunteers, Catty Shack would not be where are today! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, check out our volunteer page.

LauraName: Laura

When did you start volunteering at Catty Shack? Spring of 2008

How did you start volunteering at Catty Shack? I found out about Catty Shack through work. I work for the University of Phoenix and we have an online database called Apollo Volunteer Match. It’s a wonderful resource that matches your skills and interests with the needs of local nonprofit organizations.

What has been your favorite moment(s) at Catty Shack so far? My favorite events are the Roar-N-Snores. Camping out with the big cats, sitting around a roaring bonfire making s’mores and swapping stories…who could ask for more!

Thanks, Laura, for everything you do at Catty Shack!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tal & NyraFrom all our residents and volunteers, we hope every one had a wonderful time spending this Thanksgiving with family & friends! As we get ready to fight the crowds for all the “Black Friday” doorbuster deals, make sure you take time to remember what you are thankful for.

This year has been filled with some surprising and exciting times for Catty Shack – and we are grateful for every one of them! Here are a few things we’re thankful for:

  • Our residents that we were able to rehome this year: Jade, Cayenne, Nikki, Misha, Amara, Sheba, & Van Gogh.
  • The increased support from the Jacksonville community and beyond towards our ranch, especially the visitors on the days we are open, more school/student groups joining us for field trips/educational tours, and our out-of-town supporters (we even have visitors coming from overseas!)
  • All of our volunteers, including the ones that have just joined our team and the volunteers who have been working almost since the beginning.
  • The ability to be looking at larger properties in the Jacksonville area, allowing the possibility for a larger area for habitats and educational experiences at Catty Shack.

Now that we’ve shared what we’re grateful for, what are you thankful for during this past year?

“The Retreat” Volunteer Group

The Retreat
The Retreat

After a long, busy Halloween Haunted Forest in October, a volunteer group from The Retreat at St. Johns came out to help put away all of our decorations!

We are very thankful to Lauren Kruta and all the volunteers that came out with her – they made light work of a daunting task.

For those of you who don’t know, our Haunted Forest is an annual, two-weekend celebration that is filled with games, crafts, a “haunted” trail, and – of course – tigers, lions, and the rest of our residents! It takes months of planning by our volunteers to make sure everything works together seamlessly. Volunteer groups from around Jacksonville come together to work with our dedicated Catty Shack volunteer team to create our “haunted” trail, decorate under our big tent, and work the weekend. Often, though, the take-down of the Halloween event can be overlooked – so we feel lucky to have such a great group of people come out from The Retreat to make sure we had a little extra helping hand to put everything away!

If you have a volunteer group and would like to schedule a “volunteer day” with us, please contact us!
