Volunteer of the Month – August

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012 0 COMMENTS

Every month, the Catty Shack Board of Directors decide on a Volunteer of the Month to give an extra special “thank you” to. Every one of our volunteers is special to us and we are thankful for all of them – without our volunteers, Catty Shack would not be where are today! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, check out our volunteer page.

The following is a spotlight on this month’s “Volunteer of the Month”. Enjoy!

When did you start volunteering at Catty Shack? February 15, 2012

How did you start volunteering at Catty Shack? I had read about Catty Shack and brought some visiting family members out in January 2011. At that time I was very recently retired and still too exhausted to want to do anything. I had said I wanted to volunteer after I retired but just wasn’t ready then. A year later, I visited on the first day the cubs were out in public and I was hooked. I attended the next volunteer meeting and started volunteering two weeks later, right after I finished the half-marathon.

What has been your favorite moment(s) at Catty Shack so far? Picking a single favorite moment is just not possible. I love all the animals but must confess that the tigers are my favorites. Being able to work in such close proximity to these amazing animals just makes everything right with my world. I have always considered myself a “cat” woman and this experience has just added an unbelievable dimension to that part of me.

Thanks, Wynne, for everything you do at Catty Shack!

Another Target Work Day!

Yulee Target
Yulee Target WorkingWow! We are so lucky to have such giving companies and groups of Yulee Target Work Day volunteers in the Jacksonville area. Back in July, we had a great group of people from the Yulee Target help us with a variety of tasks at the ranch! (We also had a volunteer group from the Target on San Jose come and help us on a previous date.)

This great group from Yulee helped us weed our flower beds and paint the cubs’ enclosure. They even (kind of) made friends with Tal…he let them trim the trees around his enclosure!

Thank you, Cari Piatt and the Yulee Target group, for everything you did!

If you have a volunteer group that think could help the Catty Shack Ranch on a volunteer day,  just contact us!

“Friends of the Cats” Business Spotlight: Express Printing

John Benso and his family at Express Printing have been a constant supporter of Catty Shack over the years. Through their business, they have helped Catty Shack with all of our printing needs – flyers, bookmarks, business cards, calendars, and more! They are able to donate most of these print pieces for little or no cost to Catty Shack, saving us hundreds of dollars over the course of a year.

Many visitors to the sanctuary have come in contact with their product, and even more have learned about Catty Shack from it! One usage of their product is the flyers. We use flyers to help distribute our event calendars and coupons during special community days (such as Riverside Arts Market and the St. Augustine Easter Day Parade). Or, if you’re already visiting Catty Shack for a tour, make sure all the children in your group have taken a free bookmark emblazoned with a picture of their favorite resident before you leave! You can also purchase a 2012 Catty Shack calendar (now half-off!) from our gift shop under the big tent.

We are thankful for all of these products that have been donated or discounted for us, along with the many other pieces not mentioned here, and for all of the time and dedication John, his family, and his team have put forth. Thank you, Express Printing!

When visiting Catty Shack, we hope you get a moment to take a look at our “Friends of the Cats” board, highlighting all the businesses that have helped Catty Shack by donating time, services, and/or materials. Please help us in thanking them by using their services whenever applicable. If you have a business and are interested in becoming a “Friend of the Cats” or a corporate sponsor, please contact us.

Time Volunteered at Catty Shack: I try to be there at least once or twice a week…not too sure, just not enough!

How did you start volunteering at Catty Shack? I came on a tour with my people from Osprey Village, a Senior Living Community.

What has been your favorite moment(s) at Catty Shack so far? Oh my; I guess the first one would be when I saw our 5 baby girls for the first time, or when Nero recognized me and came over to the fence to talk, or when Tucker reacted to me when I called his name, or maybe when it finally dawned on me the Valeria was in season and just not wanting me to love on her! I have way too many to list and I hope for a whole lot more. I feel in love with the place after our tour with Osprey Village. I have always been an animal lover. I was so impressed at how clean to animals’ areas were. They seemed as happy as they could be, well fed, clean, & sassy. I can’t say enough about my family at the Catty Shack Ranch.

Thanks, Julie, for everything you do at Catty Shack!
