Three Baby Names Announced!

JadeCayenneWhew!Nikki We had so many great names submitted for our five baby tigers that it has been extremely hard for us to decide! Finally, three of the baby names have been chosen. See below for the names and the winners of the baby name contest. Thank you to everyone who submitted names – remember, your gifts are tax-deductible and all the money raised went straight back to our animals for care, enrichment, habitats, and more. The cubs’ new habitat that is being built will cost us about $10,000 – so a big thank you to everyone that has made it possible for us to give these sweet girls a “forever home”.

For those of you who don’t know the story behind the babies, here it is! We “re-homed” five tiger cubs New Years Eve day from a facility that could no longer care for them. For the past couple of months, we have been calling the cubs by colors while we decide on names. “Pink”, “Green”, and “Red” cubs were born in one litter on December 9, 2011. “Yellow” and “Orange” cubs were born in another litter on November 25, 2011. We are so grateful to their previous facility for allowing us the opportunity to bring them into our sanctuary and give them a home! Since the five girls have been raised together, they will be sharing a habitat even as they grow older – they love to play with each other!

Our three winners will be receiving a glazed plate with their cub’s paw print and name along with a beautiful 8×10 photograph. We would also like to take this time to give a very special “thank you” to Nikki Kimbleton who has done so much for Catty Shack.

“Yellow” and “Orange” cubs will be receiving their names soon – we will announce the names as soon as we are finished debating. Thank you to everyone for being so patient while we decide on the names.

Volunteer of the Month – April

Every one of our volunteers is special to us and we are thankful for all of them – without our volunteers, Catty Shack would not be where are today! April Volunteer of the Month - KurtName: Kurt

Time Volunteered at Catty Shack: 8 months

How did you start volunteering at Catty Shack? I knew I wanted to volunteer with a group that helped animals after I moved back to Florida. I found the Catty Shack Ranch on VolunteerMatch.org and came out for a tour one Saturday afternoon. I saw all the animals and met a great group of people, and I started volunteering right after that.

What has been your favorite moment(s) at Catty Shack so far? 1. During our Halloween haunted forest last year, I was called on the radio and asked to give a tour on the golf cart to someone who needed assistance getting around. When I arrived at the front, I was met by a paralyzed Marine and his family. I felt honored to have had the privilege of introducing this hero and his family to our residents. They were a fantastic group and that tour was the highlight of my Halloween.

 2. While weeding a garden bed in front of the leopards one day, I thought that it was a mundane activity that I could be doing anywhere. A few minutes later, Freddy started roaring and Tal responded. At that moment, I realized that nothing I do at the Catty Shack is mundane, and that I enjoyed just being out there.

St. Augustine Easter Parade

Volunteer GroupLaura & PirateEvery Easter, Catty Shack joins in the festivities of the Easter Day Parade in St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city. The parade contains a multitude of floats from local businesses and groups, marching bands, drill teams, and much more!

Along with our many volunteers who came out to help with our “float” and hand out flyers for upcoming events, we brought Hercules, one of our “Educational Ambassadors”. Hercules absolutely loves the crowd and getting to spend some “one-on-one” time with Curt, our executive director and head curator. It is important to understand that whenever an animal is brought to an event like this, Curt always takes the time to make sure the animal is in the appropriate mood to go – we never want an event to be a stressful.

Saturday Work Day

Most people will only get to see the “fun” side of Catty Shack – you know, coming by to see all the animals play, snooze, roar, eat, snooze some more…but there’s a lot going on behind the scenes every day. Every day, volunteers work tirelessly to clean habitats, build new enclosures, repaint fences, landscape, and much, much more.

Sometimes, like this past Saturday (April 7), we have great groups from our community help us out. During this past work day, these two groups (along with our volunteers) helped do
everything from landscape (mulching, etc.) to working on habitats (such as reworking “den” roofs).

A special “thank you” to Christopher Washington and the group from Mayport Naval Station for spending their Saturday with us. Mayport is one of three major Naval stations in Jacksonville and is the third largest Naval Facility in the continental U.S.

Another special “thank you” to Eddie Bajek and the group from Impact Jax. Impact Jax is a program for young professionals through the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce and currently has over 600 members. To learn more, visit their website!

April Roar N’ Snore Sold Out!

Cubs SleepingOur April Roar N’ Snore is SOLD OUT! We will be having another Roar N’ Snore in November! Registration generally opens several weeks before the event, so keep an eye out for it!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to pre-register. We are excited to see you out at this bi-annual camp-out fundraiser…it’s sure to be a “roarin’ good” time. (Okay, sometimes our jokes around Yawninghere can get a bit corny!) One of our volunteers has been trying to contact everyone as we receive their deposit and registration form; if you are concerned about if you are registered for a campsite, please contact us. If you just sent your registration form in at the end of March, we will probably be receiving your registration documents within the next couple of days and will be contacting you.

Tiger SleepingMake sure to pack your camping equipment, snacks and beverages (please, no alcohol!), and other goodies for your time at the Ranch.
